Erring police officer remanded for two days

IMPHAL, October 13: The police officer who was beaten up by the hostellers of Manipur University yesterday night for bullying the students was arrested by Singjamei Police today morning.

The arrested police officer is identified as sub-inspector P Poujalung posted at Sangsat Police Station in Ukhrul district.

He was produced before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal and was given police remand for two days.

It may be mentioned that a team of unarmed police personnel led by SI Poujalung came to Manipur University in a bullet proof Gypsy which had no vehicle registration number. The police officer then barged into the Boys’ Hostel No. 3 and began to bully some students who were playing table tennis in the common room in a drunken manner. One of the senior hostellers intervened and asked the officer not to disturb the hostellers.

However, a scuffle broke out between the police personnel and the hostellers. The hostellers beat the police officer while the other personnel fled from the hostel.

The police officer was then locked up in a room while the hostellers blocked the Singjamei police team from entering the university campus. The irate hostellers overturned the Gypsy in which the drunk police personnel came.

More police personnel including Assam Rifles personnel rushed to the hostel to control the mob. Imphal West Additional SP Herojit, SDPO Bikramjit and OCs of Singjamei and Imphal PS also came to the spot.

The police were blocked from entering the hostel until the police officer locked up in a room was reported to have fled from the hostel.

Dean of Students’ Welafre Prof Ratankumar also visited the hostellers and assured them of necessary action from the side of the university authorities.

The high ranking police officers present at the spot assured the hostellers that the erring police officer will be suspended and an inquiry will be initiated to take necessary action against him.
