Governor Gurbachan Jagat reviewing guard of honour on the occasion of 119th Raising Day of Manipur Police

Imphal, October 19: Commemorating 119 years of glorious existence since its raising as the State Military Police in 1892, the Manipur Police today celebrated its Raising Day function at the 1st Battalion MR Parade Ground today.

Speaking on the occasion, Gurbachan Jagat, the Governor of Manipur said that throughout its existence the Manipur Rifles has served the people of the state with devotion, courage, conviction and professionalism. In spite of the enormous challenge over the years on many fronts of internal security, particularly, more than six decade old insurgency problem, the Manipur Police has been able to cope with it.

Due to the area domination by security forces the Manipur based  militants are now compelled to seek refuge in the neighbouring countries like Myanmar, Bangladesh, etc. apart from taking shelter in other states of the country, said the Governor. There has been qualitative improvement in the security environment of the state, especially in the valley areas due to the well directed counter insurgency measures. However, the overall security scenario, though improving, is still a matter of concern as the general population continues to remain under constant threat from the various UG groups operating in the state. Special focus needs to be given in this regard.

He also appealed to all the organizations including students, political parties and others not to use the NHs, the lifeline of the people of Manipur as weapons while pressing for their demands as it seriously affects traffic and day to day lives of the citizens of Manipur.

He also expressed satisfaction on the adequate steps which are being taken up to ensure free movement of vehicles and regular supply of essential commodities to the state by providing security along National highway 53 during the present economic.

The Governor further said that 10,000 officers and other ranks have been recruited during the last two years to meet the shortfall in manpower. With funds released under Special Plan assistance and Modernization of State Police Force, significant development in infrastructure has taken place.

He further went on to say that there are some personnel in the Manipur Police who take the law in their hands and carry out undesirable activities in league with certain anti national elements. There have been reported cases against 29 such personnel. They need to be given befitting punishment and dismissed from their job.

Manipur DGP, Y Joykumar, speaking on the occasion, said that police personnel are very different from all other state employees. They have taken oath to serve their motherland by sacrificing their lives. The policemen have also a great role in providing the fundamental rights of a citizen. For the Police personnel to perform their duties efficiently,  public support is a must. The Manipur police has dramatically changed as compared to the last 5-6 years because of the assistance provided by the present Secular Progressive Front ( SPF) Government led by Chief Minister O Ibobi. He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the state government for landing hands to procure weapons and equipments for the force.  On the occasion 49 police personnel were given the DGP Commendation awards for performing their duties efficiently. Chief Minister O Ibobi, Speaker I Hemochandra, Ministers and MLAs were also present on the occasion.
