ZUF blames NSCN-IM incursion for shoot-out [The Sangai Express]

Imphal Oct, 19: The mi-litant outfit Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) alleged today that around 50 cadres of NSCN-IM swooped down and attacked a hide-out of ZUF on early morning of Tuesday.

“The blood thirsty Heb-ron heroes came and attac- ked the ZUF on Tuesday morning at Nongadang village under Khoupum block, Tamenglong district where a gun battle ensued bet-ween the two groups from around 5 am and lasted till 9am,” alleged the ZUF today.

After a long exchange of firing, the NSCN-IM retre-ated as the ZUF retaliated with a volley of bullets at the NSCN-IM group, said the ZUF.

It claimed that around 2/3 cadres of NSCN-IM were injured in the battle, but there were no casualty on the side of ZUF.

ZUF warned NSCN-IM and said the group should be responsible for any unfortunate incident that oc- curs in future in Zelian-grong region.

The present incident was witnessed by the Ze-liangrong people, so the people should identify who are the wrong-doers and who are doing right, stated the ZUF.

Afer a request from many Zeliangrong civil bodies, a peace meeting was going to be held at Nongadang village with  Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR), Zeliangrong Baudi (ZB), Zeliangrong Union (ZU), ZSU-AMN, ZSUM, etc for the betterment of Zeliangrong society, the ZUF added.

“But NSCN-IM is not cheered at the leaders’ effort to bring peace and unity in our society,” the ZUF said, adding that for that reason they attacked the ZUF.

“They want bloodshed, they have ruled over Zeliangrong society through the barrels of guns and they want to act as Adolf Hitler who ruled over Germany inflicting untold miseries,” the statement of ZUF further said.

Notably, NSCN-IM and ZUF have fought gun battles against each other three times this month.

Second NSCN (IM)-ZUF gun-fight of the fortnight reported at Tamenglong [Imphal Free Press]

IMPHAL, October 18: An armed encounter took place between the cadres of NSCN-IM and Zeliangrong Youth Front (ZUF) in a jungle at Guitang village under Khoupum Police Station in Tamenglong district this morning.

According to local sources, the gun fight between the heavily armed cadres of NSCN-IM and ZUF started from around 5 am and lasted for more than three hours till about 8:30 am.

The incident happened when some suspected ZUF cadres intruded into Guitang village which was already occupied by the NSCN-IM cadres. The firing began due to miscommunication between the cadres at the spot resulting in fierce gun battle, the source added.

Further according to the source, the villagers nearby the encounter spot have also reportedly fled from their villages to some safer areas. However, no security personnel entered the area till late night.

There are possibilities of heavy casualities during the encounter on both sides, however no exact information was available with the press till the filing of this report.

It may be mentioned that five cadres of NSCN-IM were killed during an ambush by suspected ZUF cadres on October 7 at Laisok village under Khoupum Police Station in Tamenglong district.

Renewed ZUF-IM clash force villagers to flee [Hueiyen Lanpao]

Imphal, Oct 18: Fresh gun-battle broke out between the armed cadres of Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) and NSCN (IM) at Guite village, near  of Khoupum Tampak Dam under Tamenglong district which has forced the people of the surrounding area to flee for safety leaving behind the homes and hearths.

According to information received by the press, the latest confrontation between the armed cadres of the two rival groups took place at around 4.30 am today at Guite village, which is located around 15 kms to the north of Khoupum Police Station.

Cadres of NSCN (IM) opened fire and launched an attack on a mobile team of ZUF station there. Armed cadres of ZUF retaliated and the exchange of fire between the two sides lasted for around two hours. However, there is no report of any casualty on either side.

With booming guns once again shattering the peace of the area, the villagers of the surrounding area, specially women and children, have fled to safer places leaving behind their homes and hearths.

Meanwhile, sources said that taking serious note of the renewed clash between the two rival groups, leaders of Naga civil organizations  including Forum for Naga Reconciliation, have rushed in to Guite village to pacify the two armed groups.

On the other hand, Zeliangrong Community Society as well as the villagers of Khoupum Tampak have come out strongly against continued gun-fight between ZUF and NSCN (IM).

It may be noted here that in the morning of October 7 last, six persons including five cadres of NSCN (IM) and one civilian driver lost their lives while five other persons sustained injuries in a ambush laid by armed cadres of ZUF at a spot in between Taosang and Leisok.

IM-ZUF clash [The Sangai Express]

IMPHAL, Oct 18: an en-counter between suspected cadres of NSCN (IM) and Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) broke out at a Tamen-glong district area today.

According to a reliable source, the shoot-out took place from around 5 am at a dense forest near Guiteng Chingkao, which is about 2 kilometres west of Khou-pum Dam under Tameng- long district.

The source conveying that casualty, if any, on either side could not be confir- med due to remoteness of the site of incident however informed that local women activists of Khoupum areas have left for the area to avert disastrous consequences.

As pre-emptive measures villagers near the site of the gun clash have fled to safer places, said the source.

Another source maintained that ZUF cadres opened fire upon spotting suspected NSCN (IM) cadres advancing towards their position.

In case the encounter involve cadres of NSCN (IM) and ZUF, today’s incident is the third such clash between the warring groups this month after relative lull in the district was first shattered on October 7 night at Leishok village area followed by a similar shoot-out three days later at Vamgaijang village area under Tousem sub-division.

It may be mentioned that six persons, including five cadres of the NSCN (IM) and a civilian driver, got killed when ZUF activists laid ambush against a group of NSCN (IM) on October 7 in the Nungba sub-division area.

Notably many civil society organisations and students bodies have appealed to stop fraticidal killings.

ZUF blames NSCN for Zeliangrong misery

Dimapur, Oct 13: The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) alleged that the NSCN-IM has given immense hardship to the Zeliangrong villages.

Elaborating its allegations, the ZUF said the NSCN-IM only imposes its ‘military rule’ in Zeliangrong region when there are so many Naga areas that are untouched the latter outfit.

It said mobile phones, satellite phones, WLL phones and other communication devices are seized in Zeliangrong villages whenever the outfit passses through those villages. The ZUF further allege that rice and meat are forcibly asked by the NSCN-IM cadres from the Zeliangrong villagers instead of buying them.

Given this situation, the ZUF said the ‘Zeliangrong area’ is not meant for the outsiders to be used as pawn. “Zeliangrong lands are precious and it cannot be exchanged for anything,” said the ZUF.

On the recent shoot out in Tamenglong district the ZUF said it was a sad incident caused by the intrusion by outsiders that had disturbed the peaceful atmosphere.

At any cost the ZUF/ZTF will safeguard the Zeliangrong lands. It then said no others had instigated the ZUF on any activity carry out by the ZUF. “It is natural for us to protect our land and we are doing it with our own volition,” said the ZUF today.

It also said the ZUF is not against any ethnic group or community.

Meanwhile, the ZUF said it is glad that the Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) had made its position clear by announcing not to touch the Zeliangrong lands.

On the Sadar Hills issue, the Zeliangrong United Front  said the Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) will not be allowed to touch the Zeliangrong lands even an inch.

Liangmai Naga Council, Zeliangrong Baudi decry killing among Nagas

Imphal, Oct 13: The Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur and the Zeliangrong Baudi ( M) in  separate statements condemned the recent incident which occurred on October 7 that killed five NSCN-IM cadres and one civilian in a clash between Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF)’s armed wing Zeliangrong Tigers Force (ZTF) and NSCN-IM in Tamenglong district.

The Liangmai Naga Council appealed to all the Nagas to stop killings among themselves. It further appealed to all the Naga factions to join hand in the reconciliation process and support the ongoing peace process and maintain oneness of Nagas.
The Zeliangrong Baudi ( M), an apex body of Zeliangrong people regretted the unfortunate incident that occurred on October 7 between ZUF and NSCN-IM near the border area of Taoshang and Leishok village under Nungba sub-division, Tamenglong district ( M).

In view of the present situation, Zeliangrong Baudi  honestly appeals to all groups to refrain from further bloodshed and operations for the time being to give chance for negotiations since all groups have committed to strengthen the Naga reconciliation under Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR), said a press release issued by the body.  It further appealed to uphold peace and give time to be able to negotiate and bring peace in between the two groups.
